One day, my son Dino brought home to me a natural deodorant called Schmidt’s (no, I don’t think it’s the same Schmidt from New Girl). Ingredients include arrowroot, coconut oil, candelilla, and shea butter. I tried it, I loved it. So I decided to make my own deodorant.
For my whole life (expect when i was a baby), I’ve been switching between different deodorants, as I found they did not work too well on me. But low and behold, this natural one works wonders. The only downfall, it crumbles easily. Which is why I decided to make my own, in a jar (no crumbling).
I already had the Coconut Oil and the Essential Oils, and only need to buy the Shea Butter.
Recipe (makes 2 jars):
3 tbsp Coconut Oil
2 tbsp Shea butter
3 tbsp Baking Soda
2 tbsp Cornstarch
5 drops essential oil (lavender, orange, eucalyptus, lemon, sage, rosemary, cypress…)
First, you need to melt your Coconut Oil and the Shea Butter. I made a double boiler by placing a glass jar in the middle of a small pot of water.
Once it started melting, I lowered the heat to medium and kept stirring.
Once melted, turn off the heat and add the baking soda and the cornstarch. Stir until completely mixed in.
Lastly, mix in your essential oil. Your choice as to which scent you wish.
And that’s it. Easy peasy!
After the mixture has completely cooled down, it is ready to use. I put mine in the fridge to cool down faster.
Once ready to use, just scrape about 1 teaspoon and roll it into a ball, and apply to your underarms.
If the contents start to melt, usually during the summer, you can harden it in the fridge.
If concerned about staining your clothing, wait a few minutes once applied.
Try it and let us know how it worked out for you.
“How bad can it be?”
